Project Coordinator's Letter
Dear Sir/Madam,
INTRODUCTION OF THE KISUMU KANYAKWAR WOMEN GROUP
I am hereby delighted to introduce Kisumu Kanyakwar Women Group. We are a Kenyan Women Group and our mission is to cultivate self-reliance in Kisumu, Kenya by empowering disadvantaged rural and informal settlement communities through initiation of fundamental and sustainable socio-economic and environmental interventions for improvement of their livelihoods and general welfare.
The group was founded after the 2008 national elections in Kenya. The resultant post election violence, led to many women losing their homes, properties, sources of income and economically active family members. The aforementioned served as the source of my inspiration, motivation and enthusiasm to initiative the group as an avenue to proactively support these women in improving their livelihood and becoming self-reliant. Thus our prompt action involved hosting a Charity Dinner and Gala in March, 2008 and September, 2008 respectively to benefit the Kanyakwar women in Kisumu, Kenya.
In order to sustain our interventions and enable the target women to be self-reliant, we have accomplished the following three projects with the donated funds:
a) Projects for 2008
Kick-start capital for small-scale vendors (Traders and Farmers): This was the first project implemented in March, 2008. I went to Kenya and initiated the project with ten (10) women. After registering the group at the office of the District Gender and Social Development Department in Kenya as well as with the "vereinsportal.ch" here in Switzerland, an amount of KES 10,000 (CHF 200.00) was allocated to each woman as the starting capital. With this starting capital they purchased different products and sold them at the retail market. Likewise undertaken small scale farming to cultivate vegetables for their household consumption and selling of the surplus to the local markets. For more Information, please visit our homepage: http://homepage.hispeed.ch/Kanyakwar/Farming.html
Three (3) Water Kiosks were constructed in 2009, providing clean water and sanitation in the informal settlement neighbourhood.
A football club for children and youth under 15 years was launched to develop young talents in sports and also to provide recreational activities for the children and youth in the neighbourhood. Moreover, provide forum for inculcating peace and leadership qualities to children and youth as future leaders.
b) Projects 2011
The Centre for Early Childhood Development (ECD) is committed to putting young children first by ensuring quality care and education for the youngest (i.e. Baby=3-4, middle=5-6 and final=6-7 years). We aim to do this by improving the early childhood development (ECD) services in Kenya through training, support and advice in the field of early childhood development
The following projects have been earmarked for implementation in the year 2010-2012.
